Say what again?
personally-victimized-by-comics:
There are a few issues that have been bothering me about the upcoming Spider-Man reboot but they are more or less what every other Spidey fan is worried about these days. However, there is one particular issue that’s bothering me above everything else. Probably because it’s coming straight from the people that are involved in the movie and not just speculation on the fans’ part based on trailers and rumors. I’m referring to the following quotes:
“Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker, while I think Mary Jane fell in love with Spider-Man.” - Emma Stone, source
and the most recent,
“In the comics, Gwen fell for Peter Parker, and Mary Jane was more after Spider-Man.” - Marc Webb (followed by) “Gwen is in love with Peter Parker in spite of him being Spider-Man.” - Emma Stone source
If they were referring to the Sam Raimi trilogy this argument could have had some basis (emphasis on some because by the end of the movie MJ is in love with Peter despite her initial attraction to Spider-Man), but they are referring to the comic books. Mind you, the interviewers were the ones that on both occasions asked about the differences between Gwen and MJ, and while Emma initially pointed out that the girls come from completely different family backgrounds (accurate!) and about how Gwen is equal to him on an intellectual level because she is the valedictorian (I don’t like it when one is considered intellectually equal because they get good grades while another is not because their goals are not academic…but at least Peter and Gwen do have common interests when it comes to school etc.), the comments about how MJ fell in love with Spider-Man and not Peter were not only unnecessary but also completely inaccurate.
The first obvious problem here is the pitting of women against each other. Seriously guys, fandoms do it just fine on their own, trust me. No need for fuel! It’s one thing to point out differences in personality and another to talk about MJ as if she’s some Spidey fangirl after his autograph. So without further ado, let me show you how wrong you are (as in with scans of the actual source material). Warning: I’m not really an eloquent person when i’m heated up and English is not my first language, so bear with me.
For the people that don’t follow the SM comic books and for the ones whose memories need a bit of freshening up, I should start off with the fact that MJ knew about Peter’s secret identity before she even met him in person. Long story short, the night Uncle Ben died MJ saw Peter coming out of his window dressed up as Spider-Man (she was visiting her aunt Anna who lived next to the Parkers). Here’s her reaction:
In typical MJ fashion she goes out to party because that’s what MJ used to do. She was the original party animal in comics after all. When you’re about to pass out, go to the nearest night club.
This is a really excellent post.
