Actions that, in and of themselves, do not come under sexual harassment:
- Flirting
- Complimenting someone’s physical appearance, to their face or otherwise
- Initiating contact, physical or emotional
Actions that, especially coupled together, undeniably come under sexual harassment:
- Flirting with someone unrelentlessly despite obvious signs that they don’t want it
- Sexualising everything about them
- Never calling them by name, but instead constructing sexualised nicknames
- Disregarding their feelings (i.e. of discomfort) in order to further enable your own desires
- Refusing to interact with them in a normal, platonic, respectful way
- Constantly initiating unwanted contact
Things that DO NOT excuse sexual harassment:
- They’re young
- They’re hormonal
- They don’t know any better/they can’t help it
- It’s just what everyone does
- (of a fictional portrayal) It’s realistic
Things that DO excuse sexual harassment:
Wally is sexually harassing M’Gann. SORRY GUYS, NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT. That doesn’t mean he is an evil, irredeemable asshole who needs to go DIAF—it means that he’s sexually harassing M’Gann and should stop.
THIS HAS BEEN SOMETHING YOU ALL CARE ABOUT DEEPLY AND WHICH CARRIES PROFOUND RELEVANCE TO ALL YOUR INTERESTS, yup yup.
I think it’s interesting to compare Wally’s portrayal in Young Justice to his portrayal in JLU. Both versions are interested in an attractive female teammate(s), but the JLU version stopped hitting on Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl after they made it clear that they were not interested. Young Justice Wally has not only not stopped hitting on the clearly not interested M’gann, he has even lied to her in an attempt to get her to like him better. This is not cool, okay. Come back to me, JLU.
